Towing cost in Essex County, NJ: a $149 flat booking fee, $129 online, and the same rules in every town

One published fee, one mileage figure quoted on the call, and no town-by-town price list. Here is what the fee covers, what can be added, what never is, and how to get your exact total in a minute.

How a tow is priced

An Essex County tow is the $149 booking fee plus the miles to your destination

Take the $149 booking fee ($129 online), add the per-mile charge to where the car is going, and you have the cost of a tow anywhere in Essex County; recovery work is added only if the car cannot roll or steer, and only after you hear the amount.

01

Booking fee: $149 by phone, $129 online

Call and the fee is $149; book online and it is $129. It covers dispatching the truck and hooking up the car, it is the same in Newark as in Essex Fells, and the $20 gap is the dispatcher time you saved.

It applies to cars, SUVs and pickups on a wheel-lift or flatbed. Box trucks, buses, vans and tractors go on a medium or heavy-duty truck with their own quote.

02

Mileage from pickup to drop-off

A per-mile charge covers the trip from your car to its destination. A short hop inside one town adds little, while a run from Newark to a dealer in Livingston adds more. Out of state or to the shore becomes a long distance tow, tolls and return included.

03

Winching, dollies and recovery

Recovery is charged only when the car cannot roll or steer: crash damage, a car slid off a reservation road, water from a Route 21 flood, a steering lock with the wheels cranked. Most of that is clear on the phone and goes into the quote. If the driver finds something new, he tells you the cost before he starts.

04

What never shows up on the receipt

No surcharge for the hour, the weekend, a holiday or fuel. No fee for riding along.

No storage on a car delivered to your shop, dealer or home. No charge for asking what it would cost.

Where the car is, where it goes, what it is: give dispatch those three and you get the exact number.

Roadside prices

Jump starts, flat tires, lockouts and fuel in Essex County are one flat price each

A jump, a spare-tire change, a lockout or a fuel delivery anywhere in Essex County is one flat price with no mileage, and most end with you driving off rather than riding in a truck.

Jump start

Dead batteries at train-station lots, hospital garages and cold driveways across the county. Commercial packs for gas, diesel and hybrid; if the battery is done, the tow is quoted right there.

Flat tire change

Your spare mounted on the curb or the ramp shoulder. No spare, or two flats, and the car goes to the tire shop you pick at the tow rate.

Car lockout

Keys inside at the Livingston Mall, a Montclair meter or a Newark garage. Non-marring tools, no broken glass.

Fuel delivery

Empty on I-280, Route 10 or Pompton Avenue. Enough fuel to reach the next open station.

Think it might not need a tow? Say so first. Roadside costs less, and that is where we start.

Why a tow in Essex County should not cost more because of the zip code

Some operators price by neighborhood, charging more where they think people will pay; our Essex County fee is the same in every town, and only the miles you actually travel change the total.

Towing prices in a county as uneven as Essex can drift with the address. A call from Short Hills or Montclair sometimes hears a higher number than the same job in Irvington, for no reason except the zip code.

We skip that. The fee is published, the per-mile rate does not change by town, and the dispatcher says the total before any truck moves.

Storage is the other quiet cost. A car taken off I-280 by whatever truck arrives first can end up in a yard that bills daily, so choose your own truck and your own destination.

Ask for the number. It is free, it is flat, and your town does not move it.

FAQ

Pricing: common questions

Short answers to what people ask about this page; the dispatcher can answer the rest.

Does a tow cost more in some Essex County towns than others?

No. The booking fee and the per-mile rate are the same in all 22 towns. A longer trip costs more only because of the extra miles.

Why is booking online $20 cheaper?

You typed the details yourself instead of a dispatcher taking them down. If you are safe and have a few minutes, keep the $20; if you are in a live lane, call.

Can the price go up after the driver arrives?

The booking fee cannot. If the driver finds something you could not have known, such as a car that will not roll, he tells you the extra cost before doing it and you decide.

Will I pay storage?

Not on a car we deliver to your shop, dealer or home, which is how our tows end. If you ask us to hold a car, you hear the daily rate first.

Will my insurer accept your receipt?

It should. Every line is itemized, fee then miles then any recovery, and a copy can be emailed straight to the adjuster.

How do I pay?

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash when the car is set down. Businesses can set up monthly billing on net terms.

Anything else? Ask on the call.
